[V8] Another "freak"?

About a year ago, I had the distributor cap post for #1 cylinder crack all
around the base, causing a path for the spark to the distributor cap ground
shield.
Back then I figured that either I or the tire shop had accidently hit it and
cracked it. I just put on another cap and off to the races...
So over the last two weeks I started to notice "the surge". I didn't think much
of it, but on the way home from work last week it really started missing badly.
I started looking around and found another cracked post.
WTF?
There is no sign of mechanical damage, the tie rod is on the right way (it is
the original part - factory installed) and it would have to bust off other parts
before it hits #1 anyway.
The motor mounts and torque stop are pretty new, transmission mounts are
original.
I did R&R the rack a while ago, but I removed the whole distributor to avoid
damage to it.
I am stumped. For now I removed the ground shield and put a bunch of silicone
around the post - and the motor is running fine, but I don't want to put on
another $60 cap just to have it get busted again.
