Before you do that, Ed, I'd charge the battery (maybe even replace it  
temporarily) - may have a bad cell or one that's on it's way out.   
Then lock and unlock the doors with the key (important). I found this  
out the hard way. Then attempt again.  If you need a new starter I  
have a brand new Bosch one that I never installed.  I bought it  
because I had pretty much the same symptoms as you describe....
