[V8] Causes of Bad MPG?

The mechanic starts on it today. I can't wait to get it back. It's been down 
nearly a month already. I've been driving "rusty" our backup '89 Vovlo 240. 
It's ugly, has no radio and is uncomfortable but hey, it runs when the V8 
doesn't.
