[V8] Alternator

Got the dreaded brake/ABS/batt dash lights and new the alt was going. 
Keeping the engine on rev (about 80 MPH) kept the idiot lights only 
flickering. Made it most of the way home.  Pulled the voltage reg and one of 
the brishes was worn past spec and the other looked almost new but best 
guess was is was original.  Sure smacked of VR to me so I got a new one and 
no output at all from the alt. Is there any way to test the VR?  
Infortunately the only one in towv was Chinese in origin so it is suspect 
but how can I bee sure alt or VR?
