So, I have had these symptoms occur twice on my 200K '91. Once at about 110K
then at about 180K. Brush wear was the problem both times--one brush (can't
remember which) was always worn significantly more than the other despite my
meticulous slip-ring polishing and brush alignment. I just went to a repair
shop and they gave me some brushes for free that I soldered in. If a brush
is worn so badly that the lights start coming on, you are likely to have
created some arcing on the slip rings, need to clean then up before putting
in a new VR with new brushes. Good luck.
