[V8] Menopausal Type 44

Well, I guess my V8 temporary substitute, aka The Old Gray Mare, aka 1990
Audi 100 FWD sedan is menopausal. She suffers from temporary occasional hot
flashes.

Here are the symptoms. Engine running either stationary or traveling down
the road, occasionally the air conditioning will lose cool. It does not
blow hot, it just will not continue to blow cool air. The air coming out of
the vents is ambient temperature coming in from outside.

HVAC selector in "Auto", temperature set to 70 degrees.

Sometime later...oh, 3 minutes, four minutes, seven minutes or so...cool air
resumes.

No audible mechanical noises, no apparent signs audibly of the compressor
cycling off, just not cool air.

I suspect that the system may be low in Freon, and the system would have
Freon as it has not been serviced in around seven years. I believe that the
last time the car's a/c was serviced was by the dealer, and my father hasn't
driven that far in about seven or eight years.

Of course, the other possibility is that the compressor or receiver/drier
has gone bad, or is going bad. And THAT makes me think odd thoughts about
The Black Mariah, which is sitting out in the back yard complete with a new
a/c system last year....

Thoughts?

Roger
