I exchanged civil emails with the seller today. I suspect that there were
several issues at work which prompted his rather petulant or churlish
display.
First of all, he said that he had been deluged with snotty, "you're an idiot
unworthy of having such a fine automobile" messages. I believe that, in
that this list has borne witness to such diatribes from immature individuals
who believe that owning a __________ (fill in your favorite brand and model)
automobile somehow anoints you into a special circle of special people.
Anyway, the seller explains that it is a nice, fun car to own and drive.
But he also goes on to say that his description is accurate: it is not a
"mint" example of anything, but a nice fourteen year old car. Nothing
special.
I think he was sincere in his apology to me. He apologized because I asked
my questions politely and without being judgement or professorial. He
admitted that he made generalized statements that he knew were incorrect and
that he made a mistake. He is not an enthusiast nor does he want to be.
So, if this car does not pass reserve, it may be relisted in a month or so.
I think the car is probably worth more than the "Buy It Now" price, but the
auction may well be spoiled by unfortunate adverse commentary.
I hope all ends up well for the guy. This might be a decent car to restore.
Roger
