Subject: [V8] Shift knob refinishing

Does anyone any suggestions for removing the shift pattern display insert from the wooden shift knob?

A gentle prise with a pick tool isn't doing it, at least not without messing up the wood. I'm wondering if there's any BTDTs for soaking it in some kind of magic potion so it just plops out, or a Fonzie spot to dislodge it somehow...

Or do I just tape it off and trim with a razor? I'm looking to sand it down and refinish it so its appearance is on par with the rest of the interior.
