[V8] Shift knob refinishing

Maybe it does unscrew, but pushing it out from inside is a no-go -- with the knob upside down, the "bottom" is a centimeter or so more shallow than what I'd figure is the back of the pattern insert.

No biggie... I just double masked it, and razored aroind the perimeter. Sanded with 120 then 180, and it's ready for stain. Just gotta get to the store to pick out the right shade. I'm taking pics as I go, and will pass on the results once it's done.

I considered replacing with non-OE, but with the paint, spoiler, and wheels, I've deviated enough from original. In fact, I removed the A4 sport steering wheel and went back to the (lame) original. If nothing else, it fits better, dash-reading-wise. Now if an urS wheel falls in my lap...

Plus, the factory knob is kinda nice!

I have not done this - but someone once suggested removing the knob
and pushing out the plastic part from the back side.
No idea if it will work, or how to get the knob off without
destroying it. Presumably it just unscrews?
