[V8] cam clearence- big cams vs-heads

Is this a fact?  How same are they?  Are they identical in all aspects
(other than stampings, etc.)?  My understanding is that a 16v VW head
can't be bolted to a 3.6 or 4.2 motor -- though I haven't had them side
by side to compare, oil passages and what-not aren't likely to be the
same... Same with combustion chamber dimensions.  And if they are the
same, what's stopping everyone from just swapping in some
widely-available bumpy Neuspeed/etc. cams?
