Switching off the ABS only affects the brakes.  The sensors also feed 
data to the system that controls the transmission (and center diff).

The wheel speed sensors (ABS sensors) are supplied new with an 
ablative cap that is pushed in against the teeth on the axle and 
provides the proper gap.  I've had good luck with pushing the sensor 
in until it hits the teeth, then turning the axle by hand it force 
the sensor out just a bit so there's no contact.
