[V8] The Audi S5: A $59000 NOPE!

Heh heh -- point taken. Though by the same argument, I'd suppose you listen to your music via 8-track and vinyl, and get your butter from a churn. And I won't even go into power windows and keyless entry and rear window defrosters and radial tires and......
8-)
Playful jocularity aside, my thinking re: today's automotive equipment is that one man's convenience (requirement?) is another man's excess, which you alluded to as well. And to be clear, I lean way in your direction rather than toward having 500 lbs of inefficient mechanical and electrical clutter strewn throughout my vehicle. (And no, the obvious hypocracy coming from being a faithful owner of a fully loaded V8 isn't lost on me.). But I gotta figure carmakers have correctly assumed that's what sells.
Since, for the forseeable future, that all is here to stay, the challenge is to keep simplifying it in the name of overcoming the aforementioned inefficiency of it all.
Carry on.

Roger, you creaky old fart. Do run-flat tires and GPS scare you too?
:-)
Nope. Run flat tires mean nothing to me. I know how to change tires and
wheels, so "run flat" has no relevance.
GPS? Nope. No fear there. Had one. Threw it away. I know how to read
maps and charts....aeronatical, nautical, and even Rand McNally. When the
batteries go flat in the GPS, I can still get there. Besides, I have only
two hands and arms. With cell phone, Blackberry, pagers and who knows
whatever, how does one handle a GPS AND drive at the same time. Maybe
that's yet another reason why there is so much carnage on the roads.
Of course, you must remember that my reference is to a time when
"multi-tasking" in automotive terms had to do with using a clutch while
steering...
