[V8] Electricity and Fluids WAS RE: If you think Audi parts are expensive....

I worked at a VW shop in '78-'79.. Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection uses a
high pressure fuel pump that is in essence a motor (WITH BRUSHES) and an
impeller at one end all encased in a metal housing with an inlet at one end
and outlet at the other. Yes folks, the gasoline flows RIGHT THROUGH the
electric motor and armature, brushes, and all then thru the impeller
(perhaps really a propeller) and out of the pump. I changed one out on a
'70 VW type III and took it the old one apart and was AMAZED at this design.
I realize that gasoline (liquid) doesn't ignite (too easily) but what
happens if you start running out of gas and get an air/fuel mix being
stirred up in there??
I could imagine the owner manual. "Attention (Achtung) -- Running out of
fuel is bad for your fuel-injected Volkswagen. It could cause your vehicle
to unexpectedly explode. Please remain aware as to your fuel level."
I must be wrong about the potential for this to happen. I can't imagine they
would let it out of the factory if explosion was a possibility...(Well, Ford
did it with the Pinto..HMMM)
Anyways, it's strange to have the gas flow thru the electric motor,
Maurice

Electricity takes the path of least resistance, so when you have a conductor
such as copper, in a pool of water electricity will flow through the copper
conductor instead of the coolant.
Induction furnaces have used this for years.
