The VAG Audi V8 repair manual says the following about checking the fluid
level on your
automatic transmission:
A) drive the car for at least 10 km (about 6,5 miles). This is to ensure
that the ATF is hot.
B) park the car on a level surface
C) put the gear selector in P (Park)
D) check the fluid level
The repair manual does NOT say anything about shifting through the gears,
driving in a special way to
heat the oil etc etc.
Do NOT put the car in N (Neutral) when checking the fluid level. This will
in many cases give
a false (low) reading.
