I'm helping Dag with the oil leak on his '92 V8. We're getting kinda tired
of pulling the front and everything in the front of the engine just to find
the leak just like before despite changing parts. Well, at least seals and
gaskets are not that expensive..
Replaced this far:
1) Oil pump pulley seal
2) Crank seal
3) Oil relief valve seal
4) Cam seals
5) Gaskets on the rear timing belt covers
6) All oil pressure/temperature senders checked out ok
7) Right cylinder head retorqued an additional 1/4 turn
We could see a slight improvement after replacing the crank seal, but still
not very good. The timing belt area is just a mess, oil everywhere. Somehow,
the timing belt itself is not contaminated.
Oil is leaking just below the oil pump pulley and out onto the alternator
bracket first, then it comes out just below the crank pulley and the left
fan belt roller. It leaks significantly more when driving than when idling
(rpm dependent), and it looks like it's almost not leaking when the engine
is cold.
Next possibilities:
1) Cylinder head gasket(s) can be leaking. Not very expensive, but a lot of
work. I think this is the most likely cause.
2) Oil pump intermediate shaft scored/scratched, so it damages the oil seal
and starts leaking. This will leak onto the pulley and make everything look
like a mess.
3) Front cover gasket leaking. Never heard of this leaking on a V8 before
and it looks very labor intensive to replace. (probably have to pull the
upper oil pan etc.)
I think we'll try a new oil pump intermediate shaft and new head gaskets
first, if not any of you have any good tips.
