[V8] Imminent Fuel Pump Failure?

Thanks to those listers who replied...

The extraordinarily noisy pump syndrome has since settled for reasons that I cannot explain. Was the acute onset of the noisy pump syndrome preciptated by the somewhat longer drive I made a few days back? Perhaps not given that I took the car out for two 50 mile errands today without incident. I think that I will just monitor for now; of course, I recognize that the odds are against me that this problem will never reoccur.

It sounds as though I probably should not pre-purchase a replacement pump until I've pulled the old one out to determine which one I've got....am I right there, anyone?

If at all possible, running the tank nearly dry prior to removal sounds like a good idea.

Gunter

Subject: [V8] Imminent Fuel Pump Failure?

One of my '90 V8's fuel pump just started to make substantially more noise today. Car has about 180 000 miles on it....to the best of my knowledge pump has never been changed. Pump was previously slightly audible.....now it is clearly audible...it is worrisome. Performance of car seems unchanged. The noise became noticeable at the end of a lengthy day trip totalling about 200 miles. I changed the fuel filter several months ago.

My questions to other listers:
- how long have I got before it fails completely?
- What are common signs of failure?
- There seem to be two available through online suppliers....one's a Bosch....the other a Pierburg......will both work?....anyone out there have an opinion on which one is better? Should I buy dealer supplied instead?

Thanks
Gunter
