Ah.  I don't think so.  I could be wrong, but I believe the noise is  
either

a) Some valve near the gas tank

or

b)The gas cap venting under high pressure.

As to the carbon canister -- maybe the valve at the carbon canister  
is bad?  An actual bad carbon canister symptom (I think) will give  
you the smell of raw gas where there shouldn't be one.
