Apparently the Audi engineers like it too. 

Most car's dash lights light up when you turn the headlights on.
My '99 A4 has the dash light up with the turn of the key, so they
are always on.  The only way to tell when the headlights are on 
(without getting out of the car and looking) is by the headlight 
icon that lights up when they are.
