[V8] cleaning rear lamp assemblies

OK, so I decided not to ditch the V8's (at least partially because not too many folks want to buy a heavy V8 powered car that's nearly 20 years old these days...what on earth is wrong with these people????)However, I've got a minor problem that'll definitely get me pulled over by the local uniformed folks if I go driving around....I'd removed the rear light lenses from one of the cars several months ago because someone was interested in them. Sale didn't go through, and the lenses didn't go back on. There seems to be some buildup/corrosion on the assemblies that hold the lamps; I've switched out with brand new bulbs and am getting intermittent lighting. What's the best way to clean the corrosion off these assemblies...or failing that, are these assemblies interchangeable with other Type 44s, so I can go to the local yard and buy a used set?
