You are correct sir -
The ECU does not close the fuel pump relay until it sees the crank
shaft turning - and that won't happen if you have dead sensors.
btw, I have an update on using the wabco wheel sensors - I have had
some issues with them, the gap from the sensor to the pin or ring
gear is pretty critical. My reference sensor was not getting a solid
reading when cold ( why???) so I trimmed a little more plastic off it
and of course went too far and the sensor hit the reference pin.
Finger still crossed that I did not do serious damage to the pin, but
it is running fine now.
This is not worth the effort unless you like removing the timing
sensors and fiddling with them a lot. On the bright side I guess, I
can have them out in about 10 minutes.
