To keep your life simple, may I suggest handling the dinner thus:

- $40 or $50 up front,
- order what you want
- drink what you want
- if there is money left over after the tip, send it to Dan
- if not, ask for $5 or $10 more each (KISS), and send the
   extra it to Dan
