"To fix, do I:
- disconnect batt overnight;
- run the ross-tech (in the drenching rain) to check codes:
- hit the dash switch with an 8-lb sledge;
- replace the (incorrect but recent) battery;
- or drive a few hundred miles and let it sort itself out?"
Answer: None of the above.
Troubleshoot the abs - if 'ross-tech' will check abs stuff then #2. I
would start with the wheel sensors if you don't have the test
equipment.(no one does) Just unplug them at the wheels and check to see
if there resistance values match the book - if not, replace.
-Disconnecting the battery may help - sometimes things just need to be
re-set - but I doubt it.
-Checking the engine codes won't show you anything to do with the abs.
-If the dash switch does nothing at all then the switch may be bad, but if
there is another issue then the switch will do nothing anyway - I had an
intermittant wheel sensor problem, the abs light would come on and stay on
until a re-start or I cycled the switch on the dash. As it got worse the
switch would do nothing.
-Incorrect battery would not cause this unless it was a 6v or 24v battery
- but if that is the case you would have bigger problems than the abs.
-A few hundred miles probably won't do it either - it has a problem and it
is trying to tell you what it is - unless it is intermittant It probably
won't go away on its own.
P.S. sounds like your alt is charging - just a guess from what you said in
your post.
Good luck
