Yup. This is Audi Country with capital letters. It is four miles from my
garage to the nearest stop light. It is almost 30 miles to the nearest
Interstate, yet only four or five miles to the nearest airport that can take
me to Boston via commercial flight.
Still, far too noisy and crowded for me, considering when I first moved here
thirty years ago, the loudest noise at night was the ice cracking on the
rocks as the tide went out. Soon a new Super Walmart will open right near
where the new Lowes just opened, which is near where the Home Depot has been
squatting for ten years. And then there will be a whole bunch more stores
clustered around Super Walmart, and all of that carnage to the wilderness is
going to occur within five miles of where I sleep.
Nope. Too noisy. At night I hear the traffic coming down from Bangor into
Ellsworth, or along Route 1 I can hear the traffic from Bucksport. I can
hear ambulances going down Route 3 toward Bar Harbor, and then, at ten or
so, the late commuter from Boston makes its approach to the airport five
miles away.
Nope. Too noisy.
But there is hope. There is the 18 acres that we have bought on a finger
that juts out toward Eggemoggin Reach that is 35 miles from here. And when
we sell this house this year, we will build new there and in silence.
