The HID bulbs are special, in that there is no filament. The HID (High Intensity Discharge) is created by an electric arc similar to a MIG or TIG arc. That is the reason for the ballasts, they are basically a step up transformer supplying high voltage (low amperage) to the blub to create the arc. The color differences are due to the different mixes of gases within the bulb and the distance that the two poles are apart from each other.
