[V8] theoretical surgical question: The Green Horney

The 100CS has been running worse and worse since it returned from its epic
120,000 uber maintenance. The check engine light has been coming on, and
after a while, going off. When the engine was restarted while warm, the
check engine would come on again.
The car would have a definite hesitation especially while climbing hills
under acceleration. Lately my wife tells me that the old dear was losing
power almost entirely. Sometimes it felt as though it needed a plug or
wires, but those were new last fall...I did them.
Yesterday, the car got to stand still long enough to visit the wrench. The
computer says, (I guess), Air Mass Sensor, although my wife's explanation
(since she took it), was "Air Something".
I had originally thought it was an O2 sensor, and I didn't think the system
even had an air mass sensor of the sort that was in the Porsche 928.
Any diagnostic thoughts? The car is going back for its surgery tomorrow,
and hopefully will be fine from thence forward. How bad will this one be,
doctors?
Roger
