Bastian,

That price increase is the killer. I've been telling others for years about 
how cheap our fuel was compared to other countries. But, when your income 
increases 3-5% per year and you budget accordingly, it really hurts. You are 
absolutely correct, though. From an absolute point of view it's still pretty 
cheap compared to many others.

For an example on the increase: a year ago my budget had $100 per month for 
fuel (mostly my diesel 82 Jetta) and $100 for food. Just a year later, that 
fuel is at $160 per month, and food has also gone up about 25% due to the 
fuel increase.

So, that's where it hurts the US population is the increase relative to the 
income increase. And, many people were barely making it before fuel prices 
went up. So, now that also has a negative affect on the housing market, with 
forclosures and such going up. It's created a pretty tough situation for a 
lot of people.
