Great intel all. I'll take a shot at the diags before sourcing a guage. I hadn't thought of that.

Yes, the gauges can be removed and replaced ... BTDT with a clock that
wasn't working right when you tried to set it ... and I plan to swap the
speedo from #344's current instrument cluster into the 5-speed replacement
unit ...
WRT the gauge function ... Look into the IC built in diagnostics before
getting too carried away ... the problem may be somewhere other than the
gauge itself ...

Regarding gas level indicators... When I left for a 3 hour drive yesterday I
showed half a tank on the guage. 2 hrs in, the guage hadn't moved, but "E"
started flashing on the computer. By the time I found a gas station, it took
18 gals to fill.
Thank the audi gods for the backup! Apparently the guage just stopped
workng, so now I guess it's time to get back there and mess around.
Question -- can the guage be replaced by itself? Because even if I get it
working again, the black "background" is starting to deteriorate. The other
guages are good.
