... if you have the manual, check section D9-40.  Most of the V8's
diagnostics have what are referred to as "output check" modes as well.  On
the V8 Instrument Cluster the output check diagnostics verify operation of
the electric radiator fan speeds, A/C relay operation and the fuel gauge and
coolant temp ... along with the interior lights, and finally the warning
buzzer.  

It looks like you've got to pat your head and rub your tummy to get the
output checks working on the IC, but I'll bet its actually quite simple if
you're not using the VAG 1551 ...

That being said, there aren't many codes to pull from the IC:

    * 3111 Sender for coolant temperature (G83) at cylinder head.
      Defective sender or wiring problem
    * 3112 Sender for coolant temperature (G82) at radiator (lower end)
      Defective sender or wiring problem
    * 3121 Sender for oil pressure (G10) Sender defective or wiring problem
    * 4444 No Faults recorded in memory
    * 0000 End of fault code reading sequence
