[V8] Report from the Front: no surprises

Correct and that is exactly the issue that I had with The Black Mariah. The
suspension was pretty well toasted because of the three years or so that
she had had in Vermont. I don't regret the purchase, but won't buy another
car that has enjoyed our scenic beauty for more than a trip or two if I can
help it.
This car hasn't been "athletically" used in the rust belt by the look of it
underneath. Now that is n't to imply that it is perfect...because it is
not...but it is pretty good for an 18 year old car with 62,000 miles.
And about the Eldo...back in those days, one of my larger clients was a
Buick/Olds dealer who sold the same engine in various models on their lot.
The problems with the 350 small block turned diesel were many and manifold,
but if the maintenance was done correctly and on time, they were a pretty
reliable, if relatively expensive, engine. The trouble now of course, is
that the GM cars of that vintage were pretty ugly...then and more so now.

An LD diesel...that's not a garage queen, it's a High Mile example. I
don't think I've ever heard of one getting all the way to 11k miles
before!
On the clipped parts of the post, we're in complete agreement. Maybe the
way you wrote it came across as a blanket indictment of all rust belt
V8's. FWIW most of New England doesn't get the frost heaves you get up
in Maine (pot holes are just as bad or worse down here), for those who
don't know what one is or calls little ridges frost heaves, the ones you
get up Rogers way can launch a car several feet in the air if they catch
you by surprise...BTDT.
