The hardware for research and medical equipment encounters the same
problem.  A few years ago I had to dig up some 15 Meg, yeah, 15 meg Hard
Drives for a guy overseas who needed it for some scientific equipment. 
The machine was all firmware driven and would only work with this one
model of drive, even the board on the drive had to be swapped out with
the one on the machine.  I dug a couple up on FleaBay for about $7, the
alternative was to scrap a rather expensive to replace machine.  Who'd
have thought all that old computer junk would be worth something again.
