... if your whur-ried about the TB you should pull the cover off the left
side (two hold-down bolts, 6mm hex) to be sure.  

ISTR some people had a theory about the lifters getting pumped up to the
point where the valves wouldn't close after a very short run of the engine,
and that caused the engine to crank strangely ...

Sounds like a broken timing belt.

Before codes, just check spark.  Beyond that, pull a plug and see if the
starter motor is moving the internals.
