... from what I've been reading there have been some positive developments
... and some promising news has fizzled (Navistar announced a camless diesel
in 2000 but had problems).  From the quick reading I did, the possible
efficiency gains and superior emissions control have many of the major auto
manufacturers working for a practical configuration.  Here's a few links:

I read about a design like this many many years ago.  This one used  
pneumatics to slam open and close valves.  It was a race motor  
application, and last I heard it worked great - just cost too much to
