CLASSICS ON THE CUSP, the cars you should consider buying now.

When AUDI ' S V8 appeared in 1988, it was the marque's first foray into

Mercedes/BMW-dominated luxury sector. But what a debut : its quad-cam,
all-alloy V8 was a gem, its four-wheel drive and auto combination was an
Audi first, and its restyled 200-derived shell had a square-jawed elegance.
Oh, and even the 250bhp 3.6 could do 146mph ; the post-'90 280bhp 4.2
topped 150.
Today these rare beasts - only a couple of hundred right-hookers came
here - enjoy a cult following, with prices comfortably exceeding those
for its bland A8 replacement. Don't expect to get one for much less than
£2500, with the very best likely to find £5k and more.
