I thought the safety catch-release was part of the audi rings in the grille.
Try lifting up on the hood after you've pulled the inside cable. A small
portion of the rings should protrude and that releases the safety.
Glad you got it home - good luck chasing all the little problems.

Thanks for the shorter belt info. Yeah, I'm hoping nothing seized
up.
But it's not my first Audi, so I shouldn't be surprised at whatever
it
will throw at me. Not that I'll be happy, just not surprised.
Save me the search... Where is the under-hood latch release?
