[V8] e-code headlights and safety inspection

If they even notice, I'll pay your $15 inspection.  Taking it to Chris 
does not count!  If they are working properly also extremely easy to aim.

I have a state safety inspection coming up on my new-to-me V8.
It has E-code (European) headlights, which are not DOT approved.
My fear is the inspector may call me out on them.

I seem to remember a thread where the DOT relaxed requirements
and allowed e-code headlights. Am I dreaming? Does someone have
a pointer to the thread/DOT document?  Googling and searching
nhtsa.gov and Audifans, I came up empty.
