[V8] e-code headlights and safety inspection

In Canada.... your friendly mechanic does the safety (certification). You
can literally get a safety sight unseen if you have a good contact... My
mechanic let my car go with cracked windshield, suspect park brake
adjustment, welded rim etc etc etc... For something like these lights not
one mechanic here would fail your car. Is the Department of Autoland
Security that tough? (that being said, a lot of very abused cars make it to
the road because of this... scary vehicles. I don't know what's
worse...some of the crap on the road or failing for Euro headlights)

lights. We've had euro headlights on the V8 and 5k for a long time and they
passed inspection. But, the last time I took the V8 through inspection, this
is in New Joisey, they failed me because the taillights and signal lights
did not have a dot stamp on them. I had put on the smoked lenses that Bruce
was selling a few years ago. Now they didn't fail me for the euro headlights
so I assume they have some sort of stamp that the New Jersey inspection
system accepts.

The smoked tails are usually a red flag, not the markings. Most modern
cars, including my MkV Jetta have no visible DOT markings on the factory
taillights. Once would have to remove the lights to see the DOT stamp on
the bulb holders. Hopefully they pass my car next year with e-code OEM
LED tails as they lack FMVSS 108 required side markers.
As for the Audi 4kq I have, somehow it passed with a loose headlight
(crappy plastic adjuster broke), something they like to fail a lot of
people for. Hopefully the H1+H4s I'm putting in will pass this year.
Judging by the amount of VW folks with painted and shaved front side
markers passing, I don't think they pay too much attention to lights in
NJ otherwise.
