[V8] It's a joke and it makes me mad!

I'm not shopping for a new car, but out of curiosity I checked our two Audis
against the Cash for Clunkers program. I am NOT amused, and I think the
gummint is really losing it.

Both the V8 and my wife's 100CS Quattro Avant qualify for $4500 toward the
purchase of a new car. Amazing.

I check the fuel mileage in both cars every time I get the cars filled up.
I make it a point to be the person who fills my wife's car simply because
the fuel gauge reads so pessimistically that she would be visiting the gas
station about every other time she drove it. The 1994 has 145,000 miles on
it, and gets exactly the same mileage that it got when we first bought it
with 39,000 miles: around 22 miles per gallon of regular gasoline. The car
serves mostly for around town, to the grocery store and so forth, which for
us means that the car always goes around 4-12 miles each time it is started,
and there is little that can be called "stop and go" driving here.

But it is a gas guzzler, I guess.

Now, my V8 surely must be a guzzler. I mean, it HAS eight cylinders, right?

Well, same, same for the V8. I never buy fuel unless I am filling the tank,
and I check the mileage EVERY time, and it always gets the same: between 21
and 25 miles per gallon of regular gas.

OK. I know about the EPA cycle. But I know what I get.

And when I checked to see if it made any difference depending on which new
car I bought, man! Was I ever surprised to see that I could get $4500 for
my wife's Audi toward a new TEN cylinder S6.

Somebody's smoking something funny, I think, and it isn't gasoline.
