The ATF trick is always amusing. It works pretty well, because ATF both has
good lubricity so it won't cause any issues, but it also has an incredibly
high number of detergents in it. You add it into the oil and it goes
through and removes tarnish from any steel parts in the engine.
One reason lifters tick is because they get sludge inside the hydraulic
piston, causing it to stick and move slower than it ought to, and this
causes improper lifter function, and is not a good thing at all.
You can actually take those things apart, clean them, and re-assemble when
you have the cams out, for a more permanent solution.
And, the rings you got were "Deves." very good stuff, I've found. I'd go
with them over Total Seal, in my opinion.
