Well, ah, yes. Exactly. Which is why I am driving #3 which will likely be
with me for ten more years. The secret to happiness is proper and
comprehensive maintenance, and gritty determination reinforced by some money
to keep the car in service rather than succumbing to "modernization". At
the end of the discussion, what car is there that is worth ten times the
price of a decent V8 for doing the sort of things that the v8 does well?
Now, what I am missing is a station wagon. The obvious candidates are an
S-6 from the 2002-2004 period, which are beginning to appear on stage for
around fifteen grand, or maybe a home made version of virtually the same
car.
My wife's 100CS runs exceedingly well with just shy of 150k on it, and there
is no reason to think that it won't deliver good service for another fifty
thousand miles. I know that at some point there will need to be a
transmission overhaul, but I am betting that it won't be before 200,000
miles. What then? Well, I still think that there is nothing wrong with
that car that a 3.6 litre V8 with its automatic transmission wouldn't
cure....and how hard could it be to do that job?

To the v8 specifically, I'm on my 5th (92 4.2 with ABT chip), and find with
255/40 17 wheel tire combo and big reds, it can alpha-dance with a lot of
faster cars with personality and ease that defies it's age and heft. At a
fraction of the price of the newer hardware, and still holds it's own quite
well in terms of a desired cross country road car in any climate. Now that
the price of them is almost dirt, a track v8 could be good fun.... Hmm.
Misc Wednesday ramblings from a v8 fan....
