[V8] black interiors...now morphed a tad

Yeah, I confess, I am getting a bit more interested in this one. And yes,
it is probably due to the heavy snow and very heavy cold.
Still and all, there is no good reason for NOT saving this particular A6
AFIK. The only real issue with the car as is, is the mileage AND the really
lousy shift gear that makes it impossible to select gears. That shifter
assembly is either frozen from corrosion or has failed internally somewhere,
but otherwise the car runs great, and appears to have been generally well
maintained.
Of course the killer as to the car's value is the mileage. No one in his
right mind is going to buy an A6 Avant with 205,000 miles on it. Everyone
knows that cars don't go that long or that far without nickel and dimeing
you to death. MUCH better to run out and pay $25,000 or more for something
much newer.
So, I am pondering this thing, with its miles and thinking maybe this is a
good project to do next year. In the meantime, I doubt that the car is
going anywhere. My mechanic has another just like it with around 80,000
miles that he had given to him because the original owner parked the car
underneath a long needled pine and allowed a couple years of old pine
needles to get down in front of the windshield which allowed the front shelf
to fill with water and do unpleasant things to the wiring and ECU. All that
has been fixed, and the car is near ready to go. Someone will get a really
decent vehicle at some point, once John decides to finish putting the front
seats back in.
But he has no desire or interest in fixing up the high mileage car and knows
that unless some far sighted sucker.er.INDIVIDUAL comes along with a
fixation, the high mile A6 will be a parts car sold to Shokan or someone
like that.IF they are even interested this far from where they take such
cars apart.
So, if I can find a suitable V8.read: CHEAP.that is running and willing to
be "harvested", I might have a go.

Roger has a project!!!
Wooo :)
V8 A6 Avant sounds great - and maybe even not too expensive if you can make
swaps like you hope.
But, you have to promise photos to accompany the words as you work through
this in the deep drifting snows. Or is this really just you're way of
staving off the New England Winter Madness that afflicts oh so many? As a
former Worcester/Cambridgian and long fan of the area (a youth spent from
the White Mountains to Monhegan Island) I am well aquainted with the Madness
;)
Roger, have you read any Bill Bryson? It might save you some money by
distraction ;)

This would be a good conversion. The 3.6 litre V8 and automatic
transmission in the '97 A6 would make a GREAT car. No, it's not an S6 but
the automatic transmission makes it a perfect car for general purposes. It
should deliver decent fuel economy as a long distance tourer, and around
town won't be terrible either....regular gas. I know where there is a
donor V8 with a broken timing belt...might be cheap enough. Then the
engine could come out, be resealed and re-valved etc, and the transmission,
ecu and harness and all that jazz would be right at hand ready to go.
The motor in the A6 is running very well, and might find a home once it is
out to help...might pay for the V8 with broken belt. Thinking is
dangerous when the ground is two feet deep with snow and it was 15 below
zero this morning.... Roger -----Original Message----- From: Ed

So, a 97 A6 Avant in green w/ecru interior has a dead transmission. No
matter what you do with the engine, you still need a transmission. To me
that makes it not quite the perfect candidate for an engine swap.
However, that transmission should be more readily available/rebuildable.
'Twould be interesting to make a call to Force5 and see if he has a
serviceable unit that could be swapped in. Maaaayyybe even could trade
straight up working engine for working transmission. Voila, the perfect
candidate. I like the idea of a C4 Avant with a V8. Hey, "they" even did
it over there. How much of a job w
ould it be to fit a PT into a C4? Fitting a 20v turbo 5 and a manual
would be far more work and you would be left w/o the distinctive looks of
the 91 Avant. Why build an S6 Avant when they're already out there waiting
to be purchased? Personally, I would want to do this as efficiently as
possible, given the primary goal of creating a V8 Avant. Starting with
this particular candidate, swap the working engine for a working
transmission. I chose the PT because I have no idea how robust the A6 V6
autobox is so I figure tax it as little as possible. We're still talking
240hp in place of what, 172? 190? Seems a reasonable upgrade. Not to
mention the bump in the torque. Ed > -----Original
