Nothing new, this was the case when I bought my V8Q 14 years ago.  

Back then I recall seeing that there were more Ford Taurus's sold in the
US in one month than there were V8Q's sold in the US during their entire
run.

The MB diesels have always been at a premium, no matter what they were. 
The gas powered cars have no where near the market the diesels do.  I
don't go a week without someone leaving note asking for first dibs on my
'87 300TDT, it's almost like a cult with these MB diesel heads.  Some of
the prices paid for these things would make anyone seriously question the
sanity of some buyers.
