[V8] starter / serpentine belt BTDT?

Thanks to everyone who's replied so far. I really appreciate the help and the step-by-step. I got started on the job tonight, and put in just an hour or so, kind of checking thing out and going very slowly.

I put up a couple of photos here: https://cid-a0eec9d1fb38945b.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Audi%20V8Q%201990%20-%20Titan%20Grey?ct=photos

I've got a couple of things I'm curious about (this is all shown in the photos):

1) Poking around, it looks like I've got some oil buildup in a couple of places. I've marked the locations in the photos, and am not sure if it's anything to be terribly concerned about, or something I should just clean up and keep an eye on.

2) Following Ron's instructions, I removed the passenger side spark plug wires from the plugs. When I removed the wire cover, I noticed a bunch of tiny bits of stuff near the plug wires. It sort of looks like really dark, fine sawdust or iron filings. What is that stuff?

3) The old starter has some serious corrosion on it. Is this normal for a car without the belly pan? I'm guessing that at 134k on this '90 that it's the original starter. I see here and there in the engine some spots of white/grey buildup that look like corrosion and the mechanic who fixed a no-start problem for me recently mentioned that the crank sensor had to be cleaned because something had leaked on it at some point and caused some buildup/corrosion.

Since I'm new to working inside the engine compartment/underside of these cars, I thought I'd throw up the pics and see if any alarm bells sounded for you folks who have spent a lot more time on the beasts.

Thanks again for all the help.

Karl
