I will look a gift horse in the mouth from now on. I got a 2001 Cheby
Impala LS that belonged to my mother, at 50K miles or so I had gone
through ignition switch, body control module, steering rack, at 70K ball
joints (for the 3rd time), resonator, cooling fan (for the 3rd time).
Gauges all over the place, trip/mile/miles to empty computer giving
strange readings, last week (at a tad over 80K) the transmission goes
south. 4 fuel pressure regulators, 2 power steering pumps, and a
partridge in a pear tree to top it off. Total POS IMHO. NEVER should
have bailed out these idiots, they couldn't design a decent car if their
life depended on it. GM pickup trucks, yeah, those I might consider, but
only because the Germans don't make one.
Looked up the Body Control Module on Google, I get thousands of hits
about defective ones (GM says there's no problem, so owner pays), looked
up transmission, hundreds of posts on some failing at mileage as low as
10K, again GM does nothing for owners.
When I was exporting cars/trucks, I had to replace 15 injector pumps on 7
GMC diesel pickups. GM wouldn't admit a problem until about TEN years
later, and even then, their response to the problem was a joke. If I
want to get treated with contempt, it may as well be by someone like
Audi, at least I get the benefit of a great product for the headache.
I will agree the Asian cars aren't much better, I could go on for a
couple dozen paragraphs on the dismal experience I've had with some of
the ambulatory toilets.
No matter what goes wrong with my V8Q's or lesser type 44's, once they're
back on the road it's all worthwhile, worth whatever it took, something
I have never been able to say about Asian or American shit boxes.
