I'm not sure on the V8, but with my 5000 CD qt 87 I'm able to change the Voltage Reg while the alternator is in the car . This can save you alot of time. If you can remove the two small screws from the back of the alternator that holds the VR in ...it can be a 20 min job.
Make sure to get the correct VR for the alternator 14V or 14.5V. ( 20-40$ )
