[V8] Clicking + no start?

If the starter wasn't engaging then were is the noise comming from?
If yiou had just said that the lights were flickering ect W/O the "rat-a-tat-tat" noise I would say your voltage reg or alt was bad.

 Do you have someone else that can crank the car while you check voltage or to pin point were the noise is comming from?
