I am not sure about a failing cat, but a very rich mixture will make
that rotten egg smell - it means the cat is trying but failing to burn
up whatever it is supposed to burn up.
Left unchecked, you will have dead cats.
I think I would look for an overly rich mixture problem before I
condemned your very expensive and hard (or impossible?) to get cats.
The obvious culprits are probably fuel pressure regulator, MAF, O2
sensor, in that order.
