Yep, it's all about selling new cars.
If they were really interested in cleaning up the carbon footprint (and I
think they'd be a LOT more successful doing so), they should not have the
restriction to new cars, but rather to more fuel efficient vehicles, even
ones that are 3 or 4 years old. That way you're not just giving the
incentive to new car buyers, but also to people who either can't afford or
won't buy a new car out of principle (that'll drop that 4.5k in value within
a year or less of buying it in the first place). Heck , make it ten years.
I'd love to get a 2001 tt quattro :-) with 21 mpg avg and baseball glove
leather stitching. Of course, I'd still have to keep one V8...
