[V8] Noise under load @ 1800 RPM

On the 5-speeds, there is a removable cross member under the car - at
about the middle of the car. If you have the same cross member, and
you have worn out motor mounts (likely) then the drive line clanks on
the crossmember under hard acceleration and it is very audible in the
car. No one outside would hear a thing though.
One easy way to check for worn motor mounts is to look at the "torque
stop" thing that looks like a motor mount up near the alternator. If
that is broken, you need new mounts.
I will ignore the fact that you mentioned scuberdoo in the same
sentence as V8, but be warned - the Audi gods never sleep....
