When I've needed this sort of signal I use the wire that goes from the ignition switch to the alarm module to chime when the door is opened when the key is in the lock cylinder. To minimize the load on the circuit I use the signal to energize a relay which I use to create the supply for the stereo.
Another interesting circuit to use is the window power circuit. I've used this on my V8 to supply the auxiliary 12V for DVD players and GPS. The window relay supplies power when the ignition is turned on, and it keeps the power on until the ignition is shut off and one of the front doors is opened. This makes sure the battery doesn't get run down because one of these devices is left plugged in and turned on ...

So... Back at this againn what's a good source that only gets power with the key in? I was thinking fuel pump? In which case I can get a bridge fuse thing and add a line at the fuse box.
I'm having difficulties with my multi. It won't read most posts at the fuse box because of its leads.
Thanks as always all.
