The other thing that sometimes causes this situation is the cruile control 
rod groomet breaking. However, as it usually sticks pretty far open, you 
will have an engine near or at redline when this occurs.

It sounds more like both recent posts are cases of the bearings sticking.

Sticking throttle usually derives from the throttle operating rod located in
the middle of the two-piece inlet manifold. IIRC, the rod itself has two
support bearings which can be replaced if necessary(I never had any problems
with it, so no BTDT on this one). A bit of cleanup and lubrication will most
probably help a lot.

You can actually test both(the rod and the cable) by disconnecting the
throttle cable and moving both by hand.
